Mission Statement
Our cluster of parishes is a community of Catholic Christians dedicated to active participation in faith development. Through education and communication, we challenge the members of our parishes to grow in worship, formation, and service. We strive to follow the footsteps of Jesus by teaching His ways, befriending the lonely, aiding the poor, and working for justice and peace.
Call to Order – Gary Hecimovich called the meeting to order at 6:02. Those in attendance were Gary Hecimovich, Randy Tatur, Deb Bonczyk, John Bonczyk, Lynne Wierzba, Betty Antczak, and Bob Lecheler.
Opening Prayer – Gary opened with prayer.
Approval of Minutes – The minutes of the February meeting were reviewed. It was pointed out that the sentence, “Bishop Powers has approved further discussion but has yet given approval of any final plans”, should state, “Bishop Powers has approved further discussion but has not yet given approval of any final plans.” A motion was made by Betty and seconded by Randy to approve the minutes with the correction.
Financial Report –
- Current Balance and P&L – The Balance showed $14,198.39 in general checking. Total assets and liabilities were listed as $64,051.94. It was pointed out that $966.49 was in a general savings account. This is the interest from the perpetual care fund. It was decided to leave the money in the savings account for later use. The Profit and Loss showed income in the amount of $63,978.11. Expenses were listed as $50,044.59 for a balance of $13,933.52. This includes $13,409.00 from the Employment Recovery Tax Credit connected with reimbursement during COVID.
- CSA – The goal is $7,725. The current balance is $4,460. Payment of $3,265 has been made by 18 households. $190 has been pledged and not paid yet.
- Other – The budget has been submitted to the Diocese for approval. It reflects a balance of $210. Once approved by Bishop Powers, it will be voted on by the trustees and Fr. Papi for approval. There was discussion regarding the implementation of a parish giving program through Our Sunday Visitor. It was decided to arrange a meeting with the representative to get more information before making a decision. Bob will speak with the representative to arrange a meeting.
Old Business:
- Facilities Overall – There is nothing to report. Everything seems to be working smoothly.
- Use of Space in Old School – There was discussion about a person, Barb, using one of the rooms as a sewing room. She has just completed curtains for the basement. It is not yet determined if she will continue to use the room as her sewing room. It was suggested that if she continues to use the room for her purposes, she will need to pay a nominal fee to cover the cost of electricity. Deb will speak with Barb to find out her plans. Bob will come up with an amount to reasonably cover the extra cost of electricity.
- Evangelization Update – The summary of the April 15, 2024, team meeting was shared. Discussion took place regarding what determines a parish’s feasibility for activity and facilities. The SAQ that is submitted each year to the diocese, along with financial records and participation in parish activities are used to determine parish scores. It was pointed out that low scores do not necessarily put a parish at risk of closing. Rather, it helps parishes better understand how they make a difference in their communities in bringing others closer to Christ. That is the purpose of moving from maintenance to mission.
- Insurance Inspection – The inspection by Catholic Mutual Group questioned the water heater in front of the breaker panel. It was suggested that the insulation be tested for flame resistance. Everything else seems to be in good order.
- New Facilities Manager – Everything seems to be going well. There are no issues at this time. A suggestion was made to turn off power to the large water heater to save money. It can be turned on prior to events requiring the use of hot water.
- Other – Bob asked how things are working out with the change in Mass time. It appears that more people are in attendance and giving has improved.
New Business

A motion was made by Lynne and seconded by Betty to increase the cost of cemetery plots from $200 to $300 for parishioners and $400 to $600 for non-parishioners, starting July 1, 2024. The motion passed. A notice will be placed in the bulletin, indicating the increase.
Next Meeting: August 14, 2024, 6:00 p.m.

- Budget – There was discussion about future giving and the sustainability of the parish.

- Questions for Bishop Powers – Bob indicated that the questions he received would need to be reviewed by those asking the questions before sending to the bishop. As no meeting was called, it was decided to respond to the questions at the council meeting. Saturday night Mass: There is a concern that having Mass the same time as St. Mary in Bruce, has reduced giving at Ss Peter & Paul. It was reported that giving when at different times with St. Mary’s is the same as when Mass is at the same time. Change Mass times every two years: Fr. Papi plans to review Mass times throughout the cluster to determine if there is a better schedule. Rotate Masses, including with communion service: This was not discussed at the council meeting. However, Fr. Papi will find out from the Diocese if communion services are permitted on weekends. Ss Peter and Paul to join Barron cluster: This will be presented to the Diocese of consideration at the presbyteral council. Weyerhaeuser share a priest with Bruce and Strickland: This will require approval at the diocesan level. It will likely require higher payment on the part of the parish. Pay for Hispanic Sisters: There was discussion regarding the ministry of the Hispanic sisters in the region. Their ministry is to the Hispanic families in Rusk and Barron Counties, with costs shared by all parishes in the clusters. A request was made to have the sisters attend Mass at Weyerhaeuser periodically. This issue has been shared with the chancellor. CSA: An explanation on how CSA is determined was shared.

Expenses are $51,127.59 for a balance of $469.72. Designated gifts were from the women’s and men’s groups to assist in paying for insurance. It was suggested that Tom would be willing to offer the use of the snowblower if needed at the parish or cemetery. Linda made a motion to let Tom purchase the snowblower for $300. It was seconded by Deb. The motion passed. Linda will contact Tom to finalize the deal. Bob indicated that Our Sunday Visitor is offering its service to increase weekly giving. Approval of Minutes – The minutes were reviewed. Randy pointed out that no investment has been made with the cemetery perpetual care funds. Investment decisions will wait until the market shows some improvement. Deacon Tom made a motion to approve the minutes. Carl seconded the motion. The motion passed.
Financial Report
- Current Balance and P&L – The general checking account is $1,957.69. Linda pointed out this is different from the amount she saw in the bank statement. It was suggested that some checks recently written may not have cleared the bank yet. Bob said he would check with Tammy to confirm.
- Budget – The net income for the fiscal year is $62.10.
- CSA – The amount owed for last year is $524.00. Deb indicated the ladies’ group will pay off the balance.
- Other – Weekly giving shows the parish is on track to meet the budget. There was a question about the salary for religious education. Bob pointed out that he took over the position, moving from teaching in the school. That portion of his salary is coded to religious education. There was discussion about whether the parish should pay anything toward religious education expenses in the cluster, if no children are attending. A suggestion was made to pay parents for teaching their children at home. Fr. Papi commented that all cluster parishes should assume some financial responsibility for the religious education of children throughout the cluster. A question was raised regarding designated and undesignated gifts. Bob said he would check with Tammy to determine the details. A question was raised regarding the St. Pius Priest Fund. It was pointed out that it is paid quarterly. The amount for last year appeared different from the current year. Bob said he would check with Tammy on the details. A question was raised regarding contracted services. Bob will check with Tammy to determine the source of the payments. A question was asked regarding youth ministry expenses. Bob said he would check to find out if it was for Totus Tuus and any other expenses. Deb provided a copy of a check she wrote for the Ladysmith News to run an ad for the polka Mass. The same amount was paid recently by the parish through the cluster office. Bob will check on this with Tammy.
- Remodel School Classrooms – We are still waiting on a contractor to go through the building and provide an estimate.
- Solar Panels – It was indicated that solar panels at this time would not be feasible.
- Other – Randy reported he sent a brick to a company to get an estimate on cost and quality for engraving. There appears to be a delay in getting material to engrave the bricks.
- Synod Follow up – Fr. Papi recommended that as a follow up to the Synod, each parish in the cluster participate in a Bible study to promote growth in faith. Some parishes have Bible studies taking place. They would be encouraged to continue and consider participating in a common program that would be shared throughout the cluster. More information will be presented to parishioners.
- Other – There was discussion on how to get more youth involved in religious education. The question was raised on how to identify school-age Catholic children in our cluster area. Getting young families involved in the life of the parish is also a challenge. It was suggested that it is still worth the effort. It was pointed out the speakers in church do not work well, even though the sound system has been upgraded. It was suggested to have someone come in to evaluate the system and offer possible solutions.
Closing prayer and adjournment – Fr. Papi closed the meeting with prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
Bob Lecheler

- Solar Panels – Randy had nothing new to report on the panels. We will keep it on the agenda for future discussion. Bob will speak with Bill Lobner about possible incentives.
- Other – Deacon Tom reported that Larry Quinn will plow snow in Weyerhaeuser and Bruce next winter. Bob will contact Donny Szozda to see if he will clear the sidewalks.
- Remodel School Classrooms – An estimate for converting the classrooms to living quarters has been requested. A response is still coming. There was discussion about converting the space into office space as another option and if there is a need for it in the area. If the estimate makes it feasible to consider the remodel, a letter will go out to all parishioners to get their feedback.
- Eucharistic Revival – June 26, 2024, is the scheduled date for Ss Peter and Paul to host adoration in the diocese. The procession at OLS on the Feast of Corpus Christi was well received. It is anticipated that it will happen again in the future.

Financial Report – Linda made a motion to accept the financial report. Lynne seconded the motion. The motion carried.
- Current Balance and P&L – There was a mistake in the P&L. Only every other page was copied for council members. Bob went over the report in detail. There was discussion about not having enough money to pay bills. Bob stated that he understood there were some bills that were not paid because not enough money was available. (That was corrected in an email after further research.) A request was made to have the financial statement sent out a week before the council meeting in order to review it before the meeting. The current balance is -$6,411.70. This indicates that more money has been paid out than brought in by the parish so far this fiscal year.
- Weekly contributions – Weekly contributions have been below the weekly average to meet the budget.
- CSA – The 2019-2020 CSA balance has been paid off. The balance owed for the 2020-2021 year is $1,923. The goal for 2021-2022 is $8,023. $3,850 has been paid thus far.
- Other – Bob stated he would send out the complete P&L.
Old Business:
- Attendance seems to be down since St. Mary in Bruce moved to the Saturday 5:15 Mass. It was speculated that many people go to Strickland earlier in the day on Saturday. There was discussion about how to get more people back to church and to contribute more. It was suggested that Fr. and a council member visit people who have stopped attending. Fr. indicated he would be happy to visit with them. A list went around to determine who has not returned recently to church.
- It was suggested to advertise for snow plowing the church. Don Szozda has been cleaning the sidewalk for a nominal fee for gas. It was suggested to contact Larry Quinn to see if he would plow again this winter.
New Business
- Donate to Billboard – A request from Bob Lorkowski to contribute $1,000 to the Rusk County Catholic Community billboard on Hwy 8 west of Weyerhaeuser was discussed. It was decided that the parish is not able financially to contribute to the billboard at this time.
- Sale of property – There was discussion of the village of Weyerhaeuser’s proposal to purchase the condemned house on church property and raze it. The parish would have the option to buy back the lot. Concerns were raised about hidden costs that might be associated with the project. Lynne agreed to contact the village to get more details.
- Other – A request was made to have midnight Mass Christmas Eve. Because Fr. will be presiding at 10 Masses over three days, there will not be a midnight Mass offered this year.
Other:
- The rectory has been rented since October 1.
Next Meeting: 1/19/22, 6:00 p.m.
Closing prayer and adjournment – Fr. closed the meeting with prayer.

Financial Report – Tom made a motion to accept the financial report. The motion was seconded by Carl. The motion carried.
- Current Balance and P&L – There was a question about the cost of candles for the year and if a better deal can be found. Candles need to be specific to the liturgical space and are carried mostly by liturgical supply companies. Bob will check to see if there is a difference in costs among different suppliers. He will also check on the inventory of current candles. The unofficial budget totals for the fiscal year 2020-21 is $1,864.96. There may be a few incidental expenses yet to be covered. There was a question about the $1,000 spent on maintenance supplies for the church (6124.2). Bob will check on the details (sump pump and elevator inspections).
- Weekly contributions – Weekly contributions have been well below the average needed to balance the budget. Despite the low weekly income, the unofficial budget finished in the black.
- CSA – The CSA balance for 2019-20 of $2,510 was approved for payment at the April council meeting and was paid on 6/10/21. There was a question whether it was applied to last year’s CSA or the current year (last year).
- Other – The rent for the rectory goes to a separate savings account. It was suggested that the account be changed to a checking account. Bob was instructed to speak with Heather at Chippewa Valley Bank in Weyerhaeuser to switch the account. It will require Fr. Papi’s signature. There was a question about elevator inspection and phone repair on the elevator.
- Adoration Survey – A survey will go out to all cluster parishioners to get their feedback on whether to move back to the original room or modify the current room to allow for parish meetings and a cry room. The survey is not a vote, but a source of information in order for Fr. Papi to make a decision with the bishop.
- Other – A company sent a notice that the parish is coming upon their 125th anniversary and is offering their services for a pictorial directory. Bob will check the history files to confirm. It was suggested to check with Tony Daniels regarding what was done for the centennial celebration.

- Current Balance and P&L – The current balance is $3,599.60. There was a question as to what the preferred percentage of perpetual care for the cemetery should be. Bob said he would look into it. There was discussion about whether the abandoned building should have fire protection. It was suggested that it might be assessed by the city and that the parish has no say into the charge. There was a question regarding the phone bill, when there is no phone in the parish. It was later learned that the charge is for the phone in the elevator, which is required.

It was also clarified that the chicken dinner on Labor Day was organized by parishioners and not by the parish men’s group. Linda made a motion to approve the minutes with changes. Tammy made a second. The motion passed.
Financial Report – Deacon Tom made a motion to approve the financial report. It was seconded by Linda. The motion passed.
- Current Balance and P&L – The current balance is$5,300.06.
- Weekly contributions – Weekly contributions are considerably lower ($509) than the budgeted goal of $968.
- CSA – The goal for 2020 was for $7,818. $5,308 has been paid. $2,510 is due. The goal for 2021 is $8,070. Paid thus far is $3,875. The remainder due is $4,195. A request was made to determine what the cost per family would be for CSA. Bob will get that information.
- Other – There was a question about the long-term loan $4,189. Bob will check on it. (It is the loan for the lawn mower.)
- Mass time on the weekend seems to be working. However, it was suggested that Mass at the same time (Weyerhaeuser and Bruce) would better serve the cluster if they were at parishes further apart. It was pointed out that collections have not taken a hit since the Mass time at Bruce has changed. (In a closer look, giving has gone down in the parish.)
New Business:
- Council Member Terms and Elections – There was discussion about getting new membership on the parish council. While people on the council have been doing a good job, the bylaws call for people to serve four-year terms. Most council members have served considerably longer. How can we get new faces on the council to share their ideas? How can we give permission for those who have served many years to graciously step aside from the council, if they feel so inclined? Announcements will be made at Mass. Council members are encouraged to ask worthy candidates to consider serving on the council.
Next Meeting: 4/14/21
Closing prayer and adjournment – Fr. Papi closed the meeting with prayer.
Respectfully submitted, Bob Lecheler

Financial Report – Linda moved to approve the report. Lynne seconded the motion. The motion passed.
- 2019-2020 completed P&L – The report showed an ending balance of $13,865.22. This was due primarily to the Paycheck Protection Plan during the pandemic which defrayed costs for salaries for the spring and summer. There was discussion about updating the diocesan paper subscriptions. Bob will look into it.
- Current Balance and P&L – The parish is currently in the black by $5,829.03.
- Weekly contributions – Contributions are slightly below what is needed each week to meet the budget.
- Budget – The budget for 2020-2021 has been approved.
- Other – It was suggested that people take a missal for personal use and put their name on the cover.
New Business:
- Mass Times Proposals – There is an announcement coming the following weekend at all the Masses.
- Midnight Mass – It was decided to not have midnight Mass on Christmas Eve this year. However, it will be considered again for next year.
- Follow up on detachment – Bob checked with the diocese and learned there is no process for detachment. If the council wishes to pursue this issue, they need to contact the bishop and request a meeting to discuss the possibility of leaving the cluster for another cluster.
Next Meeting: 1/20/21
Closing prayer and adjournment – Fr. Papi closed with prayer. The meeting adjourned around 7:00 p.m.
